Allison 2000 series transmission service

Maintenance on an Allison 2000 series Transmission is easy to perform on your own. Safety is the 1st priority! Working under your coach you should always use safety stands. I drive onto blocks, set the stabilizers for safety if an airbag leaks but I don’t have Jack stands and I am comfortable not using them because I can fit under my coach without raising it at all.

The first things you will need is a filter wrench or large channel locks and a 5 gallon bucket cut off to fit under unit. before starting check the trans fluid level on the dipstick.

I am using Castrol Transynd 668 synthetic trans fluid it is backwards compatible and they make the OEM fluid for Allison Transmissions.

Changing oil and Filter is the same as an engine oil change but possibly more accesible. the 2000 unlike the larger buss transmisiions has a spin on filter, and doesnt have the shifter fluid level check. instead it has a dipstick. after removing the drain plug and filter allow it to drain a while install the drain plug, filter and fluid. after running the engine check for leaks and top off trans, test drive until warm and recheck the trans fluid level.
